AR Makeup Tutorial
Burberry, with Holition
2020
Burberry Fashion House to build a virtual cosmetic experience. The experience to include face analysis, personalised look recommendations based on user features and needs, and a series of AR make up tutorials.
The goal was to conduct UX research and propose UI designs that align with their established guidelines. The envisioned experience, aimed to offer comprehensive AR tutorials for application education and virtual try-ons.
Problem to Opportunity
Tutorial Features
In order to make progress, it was a priority to define the features of the tutorial section. Crucially, identifying the needs of the users was necessary to proceed. To address this, we conducted a card sorting activity during user testing sessions - makeup looks, products, tools, steps, duration, descriptions, animations and tutorial videos. Based on the results, I was able to suggest and propose UI designs that offer a comprehensive AR tutorial for the brand.
Animation Guide
When displaying the makeup guide through animation, it was essential to highlight the steps to demonstrate the more complex aspects of the application process. In addition to the animation overlay on the camera showing the direction, we have included numbers as visual cues to provide a clear idea. In addition, it was important to include a feature that allows users to toggle the animation overlay on and off. To achieve this, we have integrated a slider that enables users to view the makeup on the camera.
UI Element
Each step provides users with various information, including key products and tutorial videos to follow along. However, during the testing sessions, we observed that the written descriptions and product displays alone did not provide sufficient information. It was important to not only indicate the product, but also highlight the colours on the palette as a key element. Furthermore, we decided to include a tutorial video with a split screen to visually demonstrate the unique techniques of a professional makeup artist, enabling users to follow along more effectively.
